Divinity: Original Sin 2: Lohse and Jahan

miniatureLohse was a traveling bard with the unique ability to serve as a vessel between the living and the spirit world, temporarily lending her body to wandering souls. But one day, one of these guests refused to leave — an entity so strong it began to dominate her, making her act possessed.
Unlike others on the path to Divinity, she was not contacted by a god, but by this powerful being. Determined to rid herself of it, she sought help from demonologists — but the task was far from simple.

The greater demon possessing her hid its identity well, until she met Jahan*, a strange sorcerer and demon hunter

Two thousand years earlier, Jahan had been a young king who fell in love with a woman. Gravely ill, he turned to necromancy to survive, eventually summoning a demon named Balberith, who revealed that the woman he loved was herself a demon. Balberith offered him a deal: 1,000 years of health in exchange for his throne and possessions — and at the end, an eternity enslaved in the demon realm of Nemesis.

After a millennium of searching for a way to escape his fate, Jahan finally defeated Balberith — freeing himself from his bargain while keeping his immortality. He became a demon hunter, and during his pursuit of the demon known as the Advocate, he met Lohse.

He proposed a deal: find the name of her demon by confronting the Advocate, and he would attempt an exorcism. But the demon possessing Lohse was an archdemon so powerful that the exorcism failed.

Bloodmoon Island was once an ancient sanctuary where priests performed exorcisms. Those who could not be saved were imprisoned and sealed away for eternity, in the hope that the demon within them would never be able to cause harm again. One day, a doctor named Daeva arrived, accompanied by a catatonic elf, Eleanessa**. She was among the unfortunate souls who apparently could not be freed, and was sealed on the island. However, in his arrogance, the Doctor decided to attempt the exorcism anyway — but it was a total and catastrophic failure. The demon, Adramahlihk, was released and went on a rampage, permanently possessing both Eleanessa and Doctor Daeva, gifting the island to his demonic minions who slaughtered all its inhabitants.

Eleanessa’s failed exorcism condemned her to death, but as an elf, she transformed after dying into a corrupted ancestor tree. The Black Ring later attempted to seize control of the island and the ancestral tree, which is why the Advocate and his minions were summoned by the archdemon to protect it.
As for Adramahlihk, he went to Arx, the capital, where the Doctor whose identity he had stolen resided. Using this cover to pose as a physician, he took the opportunity to experiment with the most horrific methods of killing and torturing the innocent.

Lohse and Jahan eventually confronted him in Arx. Jahan was defeated and humiliated, but Lohse pressed on — only to discover the horrifying truth: Adramahlihk possessed not thousands, but millions of souls, all doomed to eternal slavery, just like her.

At the end of the journey, however, Lohse could choose to make a pact with the Doctor — if he had survived — and offer him the throne of Divinity — probably the worst yet to come…

Lohse's past before the events in Divinity: Original Sin 2 are stated in the graphic novel « Godwoken » from Larian Store.

*Jahan appears as a playable character in Divinity: Original Sin (1000 years earlier).
